FARAH X NTS A LONDON DANCE - NEW MOVEMENTS IN JAZZ

It is undeniable that British Jazz is having a breakthrough moment. Quietly bubbling under for the last few years, the energy of this new movement has pushed the genre forward as a new generation of artists draw inspiration from Hip-Hop, Grime, House, Afrobeats and Jungle music to create a sound that reaches far beyond jazz’s traditional parameters.

The scene has its nucleus in South East London where jazz musicians have coalesced, recording and performing together whilst through one another’s projects. Experimentation and cross-pollination of sounds and style is at the heart of this new type of jazz and there is a unifying sense that the scene is the star and the artists are a part of something far bigger than its component parts. It is brave, confident, diverse and collaborative and the defining sound of the UK underground right now.

Fashion & Music are intrinsically entwined. We have long been associated with underground culture and this year we have been shining a spotlight on this renaissance moment for the genre in a follow up piece to last year’s short film Nice Up The Dance which celebrated the influence of UK Sound System Culture.

‘A London Dance - New Movements In Jazz’ is a short film that captures the essence of the scene from some of the key players. Ezra Collective, Kamaal Williams, Maxwell Owin, Wu-Lu, Theon Cross, Poppy Ajudha and Joe Armon-Jones all contribute to this vital snapshot of a movement that is on the cusp of mainstream recognition. The Film Has been produced by Hector Aponysus an editor and producer as well as an artist who has performed live at the ICA, Boiler Room and Just Jam.
