What To Wear For Every Summer Occasion

What to wear for every summer occasion

Summer brings with it the alluring promise of warmer weather, and endless possibilities of plans to be made. Days out and date nights, extended family gatherings and sporting viewing get-togethers - it’s the season of doing

But with this calendar full of plans, also comes the question of what to wear. When comfort is key in the rising temperatures, how does one stay cool and collected without compromising their style? This Farah guide on what to wear to (almost) every summer occasion, will help you out.

For the weekend

Being off the clock doesn’t mean your style goes out of the window. So when the weather’s hot, put the volume of your pieces to good use. No, we’re not suggesting you size up in everything; instead, look for pleats. This detail holds the fabric away from your skin at crucial points and allows for easy moving, allowing the air to flow whilst maintaining the garment’s shape and cut. In shirts, look for side and box pleats, and wide-legged trousers.

Polo shirts are an all-round strong contender for off-duty smartness, and they can be buttoned up or down depending on your style preferences and body temperature.

For a day out

If you’re out and about for the day, you may want comfort to take a little more of a priority. Don’t compromise style completely, just make smart clothing choices. A sturdy pair of trainers will keep you comfortable on your feet for long periods of time, along with a pair of chino shorts that are neither too baggy nor too tight - both are undesirable when there’s a lack of changing options. On top, we’d suggest a plain white tee, and a short sleeve shirt as a protective overlay.

For the beach

A day at the beach is - almost by definition - a chance to clock off for the day. So your wardrobe doesn’t present the biggest question - unless you’re a lifeguard - but we understand that you may want to look as good as you feel. And don’t worry, we’re not going to simply suggest an endless parade of shorts and sandals.

Channel ultimate city vibes with a pair of patterned shorts and a baggy tee, topped off with a bucket hat. Don’t worry if the tee and shirts have clashing patterns - we’re going for a streetwear vibe here.

For a more classic beach look - such as an upmarket beach resort - it may be time to leave the faded swim shorts in your suitcase. Turn things up a notch with a pyjama-esque button down over a chic pair of chino shorts, finished off with a carry-all tote and a fine watch.

For date night

Dates in the summer can take a few forms: stroll by the river, visiting the drive in cinema, or a casual drink in an outdoor bar. Keep your wardrobe relatively smart but without going over the top.

Start with your favourite denim, paired with a jacket to keep things casual.

Keep your layers light, but also be prepared for a likely change in the unpredictable British weather if your date goes into the evening, so steer clear of shorts and don’t leave the house without a jacket of some kind.

For office days

If you still have to smarten up for your in-office days, wear as few layers as possible; opt for just a shirt and trousers or chinos if you can. Stick to white or light blue for your shirts, avoid black and dark neutrals as these will make you feel hotter.

Workplace a little more on the casual side? A polo shirt or Oxford shirt, paired with light trousers or chinos and loafers or brogues will keep you smart enough for work but able to easily switch to evening mode if needed.

For a festival

Get creative with your wardrobe if you’re heading to a festival in the summer. From Glanstonbury and Creamfields to Isle of Wight and Parklife, there’s a festival for everyone, and it’s an occasion where you can let loose your adventurous side.

If you rarely step away from neutrals, now may be the time to break out a floral or patterned shirt to really channel those summer vibes. Don’t forget your accessories - sunglasses, accessories, bracelets, rings… These are your finishing touches.

For BBQing

If your mates are heading over for beers and BBQ, you can’t go wrong with a good old shorts and tee combo. Denim - if you just can’t bear to part with jeans - or chinos, and a patterned or plain tee depending on your mood. Layer an open casual shirt over the top when you’re done with the grill.
